I'm a longtime fiction editor who has helped cull and refine writing, and I can help you make your writing more compelling, more polished, more ready to submit to agents and literary journals. I offer a variety of services, from line editing to developmental ideas.
Developmental Editing and Line Editing — This goes for short stories, essays, story collections, or novels. If you’re interested in developmental feedback, I’ll read your work and write you substantial feedback that focuses on plot, character development, pacing, and other aspects of technique. You can use these notes to revise your work in progress. If you’re interested in line editing, I can edit with an eye toward creating more compression and clarity in your sentences, along with shaping the larger narrative—occasionally suggesting you trim some material to benefit the overall storytelling. I think of this as akin to sculpture: chiseling away here and there so a truer form can emerge.
Sample Edit — I offer a sample edit, so you can get a feel for how I work and also what kind of editing you’d find most helpful. I provide an hour’s worth of free work, a mix of line editing, manuscript notes, and editorial feedback.
Rates — Line editing runs from $5 to $7 per 250 words and also includes a letter of feedback. I’ll quote you with specific rates after I’ve taken some time to look over your work. Developmental editing is $1100 up to 100,000 words and usually includes a 4,000 to 5,000-word letter of feedback, along with substantive margin notes.
